The Shaw Elevator and Channel Chute Company Limited was incorporated
December 4, 1888, in New York City. The roller coaster opened in 1889.

ON JULY 4 1895 CAPTAIN PAUL BOYTON OPENED SEA LION PARK, BEHIND THE SEA
BEACH PALACE AND ON PROPERTY FORMERLY OCCUPIED BY PAYNE'S FIREWORKS


THIS REMARKABLE PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS SEA LION PARK NEW AND THE ELEPHANT HOTEL



THE PARK FEATURED HIS "SHOOTING THE CHUTES" WATER SLIDE.   THIS IS ITS LAGOON.
IN THE RIGHT BACKGROUND ARE THE RACER COASTER, THE CHANNEL
SHUTE COASTER AND OUT OF SIGHT, PERHAPS, THE ELEPHANT HOTEL.


Boyton purchased and installed Lina Beecher’s Flip-Flap Railway


AT FIRST THE FLIP-FLAP PARTIALLY SURROUNDED THE LAGOON.
THESE TWO PHOTOS WERE COPYRIGHTED IN 1900




BASED UPON CONFLICTING INFORMATION FROM VARIOUS HISTORIANS, WIKIPEDIA,
GOOGLE SEARCH, THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND
AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION, CONSIDERATION, AND INTERPOLATION, WE HAVE COME TO THIS CONCLUSION:
IN 1901 PAUL BOYTON INVESTED $100000 IN IMPROVEMENTS TO SEA LION PARK.
HE PURCHASED OR LEASED THE SIX ACRES WHERE THE ELEPHANT HOTEL HAD STOOD.
HE MOVED THE FLIP-FLAP COASTER TO THAT AREA BORDERED BY
WEST TWELFTH STREET AND THE NEW YORK & CONEY ISLAND RAIL ROAD.

AS PART OF THE  P.P.& C.I., THE N.Y.& C.I. WAS  ELECTRIFIED IN 1899.
IN 1900 THE ELEVATED STRUCTURE OF THE CONEY ISLAND ELEVATED (SEA VIEW RAILWAY) WAS DEMOLISHED.
THE TRACKS WERE RELAID ON THE GROUND AND USED
TO CONNECT THE BRIGHTON LINE WITH THE CULVER LINE.

BY 1915 THE BRIGHTON TRACKS AGAIN CROSSED CULVER TERMINAL AND WERE CONNECTED WITH THE N.Y. & C.I. R.R.
BRIGHTON TRAINS COULD NOW RUN VIA CULVER TERMINAL OR WEST END TERMINAL.


AT BRIGHTON BEACH THE LOOP TRACKS HAD BEEN REMOVED AND TWO TRACKS RAN ON THE SURFACE TO CONEY ISLAND.

REGARDING   SEA   BEACH   LINE,


BILL   FAUSSER   IN   HIS   "THE   SEA   BEACH   TO   CONEY   ISLAND"
STATES   THAT   THIS   SERVICE   RAN   ONLY   IN   1907   AND   1908.



NEXT TO THE ENTRANCE THE MAP SHOWS TWO SHORT TRACKS RUNNING NORTH OFF SURF AVENUE.
THESE APPARENTLY PROVIDED A "LUNA PARK STATION" WHERE PASSENGERS COULD
DETRAIN AND BOARD INSTEAD OF WAITING ON THE STREET.
THIS ALSO PROVIDED A "WYE" FOR TURNING CARS.
IN THIS PHOTO THERE IS A STREETCAR AT THE FAR RIGHT.




IN THIS VIEW OF THE ENTRANCE AN ELEVATED CAR IS VISIBLE




OVER THE YEARS THE ENTRANCE GOT WIDER AND GRANDER




IN 1918 - 1920 THE N. Y. & C. I. TRACKS WERE RAISED AND BECAME THE BRIGHTON
LINE ABOVE THE CULVER LINE INTO THE NEW STILLWELL AVENUE TERMINAL.
THE ENTRANCE WAS MADE SMALLER FRONT TO BACK AND WAS NOW ENTIRELY IN FRONT OF THE RIGHT-OF-WAY.

LUNA   PARK   STATION








THESE TWO PHOTOS AND MAP SHOW THE JUNCTION OF THE SEA BEACH WITH THE CULVER/BRIGHTON LINES.
THE SEA BEACH TRACKS PASSED UNDER/THROUGH THE L. A. THOMPSON ROLLER COASTER.






AS PART OF THE  P.P.& C.I., THE N.Y.& C.I. WAS  ELECTRIFIED IN 1899
AND WAS OPERATED AS PART OF THE SOUTH BROOKLYN RAILWAY.
ELEVATED TRAINS AS WELL AS TROLLEY CARS RAN TO NORTONS POINT.
EVENTUALLY THE N.Y.& C.I. BECAME THE NORTONS POINT SHUTTLE AND
UNTIL 1948 TROLLEY CARS RAN FROM THE ELEVATED STILLWELL AVENUE
STATION DOWN A RAMP TO STREET LEVEL. THIS IS FROM A 1946 E.R.A. MAP.
